Liebenberg ‘gambled away R144m’
Liquidators of the company Tariomix are asking the Gauteng High Court (Pretoria) to sequestrate alleged Ponzi boss Louis Liebenberg for the R156m owed to the insolvent company.
Rapport reports that co-liquidator Vaughn Victor sets out in court papers that tens of thousands of ‘investors’ in so-called ‘diamond parcels’ are desperate to recover their money, but Liebenberg is unable to repay what is owed to Tariomix.
Billions of rands remain unaccounted for, and Liebenberg’s sequestration is needed to further investigations, Victor says.
An interim forensic report by Adams & Adams found that Liebenberg gambled away R144m over the past eight years.
On a single day – 6 January 2021 – he allegedly lost R4m.
The liquidators claim that Liebenberg’s only income was the ‘investments’.
‘Up to date, the liquidators could not verify a single transaction and found no evidence that Tariomix ever bought or sold diamonds,’ they state.
Liebenberg said he has not yet received the court papers.
‘The liquidators are making wild allegations without any financial statements or evidence,’ he said.
