More than two months after Cape Town cyclist Landon la Grange was killed in Victoria Road, Camps Bay, his widow Annmarie will finally come face-to-face with the taxi driver accused of causing his death.

The driver is expected to make his first appearance in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court today on a charge of culpable homicide, reports News24.

Questions mounted and frustration reached boiling point when Annmarie repeatedly demanded to know why the police investigation had taken months to conclude when the driver was present at the scene of the crash on 6 April and had provided police with details of what he said had happened.

She was informed that ‘someone has been charged for Landon’s murder’, but struggled with questions about why the man had been charged but not arrested.

Western Cape police spokesperson Colonel André Traut said the driver was not formally arrested following the incident, but was charged on 21 May and issued with a warning to appear in court after prosecutors considered the evidence contained in the police docket.

He explained that the case was investigated and later presented to a senior state prosecutor, who directed that the taxi driver be charged and brought before court.

He said the driver co-operated with investigators and reported to the police station after he was contacted.

He said investigators found no evidence at the scene to justify an arrest at the time.

After police issued the driver with a warning, he was instructed to appear in court today on a charge of culpable homicide.
