Woman apologises for racist attack on police
Estate agent Vicki Momberg, whose racist rant against black policemen was caught on video and went viral on social media, is sorry about the incident, according to her representative, Advocate Nardus Grove. Momberg appeared in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday (Thursday) on crimen injuria charges, notes a report on the Mail & Guardian Online site. Grove was trying to persuade the court not to allow the matter to be broadcast live on television when he noted his client was apologetic about her rant. Earlier, state prosecutor Yusuf Baba submitted an application to Magistrate Penny Viljoen in which media houses sought permission for live television broadcasts of the proceedings. Grove opposed the application saying the matter was being 'sensationalised' and would ruin his client's career. Grove described the clash with police who were trying to assist Momberg following a smash and grab as 'a traumatic incident', adding 'she snapped and it has caused very bad publicity for her and she has always had good relationships with her clients of all races'. He told the court that Momberg didn’t want to be branded a racist by the media because that is not the person she is. 'She has prepared a written apology that she has asked me to convey.' Testifying in favour of the matter being televised, NPA spokesperson Phindi Louw said the state believed that the public has the right to be informed about the case.’ The matter was postponed 1 August.
