University language policy ruling heads to ConCourt
AfriForum and Solidarity have approached the Constitutional Court to appeal against the SCA judgment giving the go-ahead for the University of the Free State to implement its English language policy, Volksblad reports. University spokesperson Lacea Loader said the university’s senior management and lawyers were attending to the filed application for leave to appeal.
AfriForum’s Alana Bailey said they relied on the constitutional imperative to promote diversity as well as the right of students to be educated in their mother tongue where possible in their appeal. ‘In the SCA’s judgment, it is conceded that the erosion of Afrikaans as an educational language is cause for concern and that differences about the university’s language policy leads to complicated constitutional questions.’ The report notes after the Free State High Court ruled against the university, the UFS applied directly to the Constitutional Court to be allowed to appeal, but this was dismissed at the time.
