Marikana claims to be settled ‘soon’
The police are hoping to finalise the R1bn claims to the Marikana victims soon, with some families already paid and others still to be paid, says a report in The Mercury. SAPS officials told Parliament yesterday they hoped to conclude the processes soon and the actuaries were working out the figures. The official told the Police Committee that several million rands had already been paid out to some of the people.
SAPS’ Lieutenant-General Sally Khan told MPs that 653 people had sued them for R1bn. Out of the 37 dead miners, they had agreed with the families of 31 families for the settlement claims.
Khan said the police offered R29m to the dependants of the 31 killed.
They were waiting for the actuaries to finalise the claims for some of the dependants. However, one family had managed to finalise a claim with the police and the SAPS paid the family R3m, said Khan. She added there were other people who were suing the police for unlawful arrest when the incident happened five years ago. Khan also told the committee there were 275 people suing them for assault.
