The Commission for Intellectual Property and Companies (CIPC) says the first case in which a director was declared delinquent in terms of the 2008 Companies Act has been finalised. A Beeld report notes that the CIPC obtained a court order to this effect after investigating Skyport Corporation (in liquidation).

Skyport wanted to build a R1bn airport near Malmesbury and told the CIPC it had applied to the Civil Aviation Authority for approval, which was denied. The High Court declared director Owen Wienand delinquent for a period of eight years. The CIPC says in its annual report it took legal action against 16 companies for failure to comply with the Act. The majority (15) were listed companies who failed to comply with the CIPC’s compliance notices.
