Solidarity plans to target the 15 properties of disgraced Eskom boss Brian Molefe to recover legal costs and Eskom’s unlawful R30.1m pension severance cheque, according to Rapport. Directly after the SCA dismissed his petition to appeal – his third unsuccessful attempt – the trade union delivered a bill of more than R700 000 for its legal fees.

Solidarity was an applicant in the main case. The union’s Anton van der Bijl says another bill estimated at R300 000 is on the way and they are were in the process of devising strategies to ensure payment.

Public records show Molefe has acquired properties to the value of about R35m in the last 10 years – mostly as cash purchases.

After he left Eskom, Molefe started registering bonds over properties that were earlier bought for cash. The latest mortgages were granted by Nedbank (R3m) in February and SA Home Loans (R1.1m) last month.

Molefe reportedly declined to comment on what he is doing for a living.

After a slew of new mortgages since the end 2017, Molefe has accumulated registered bonds of more than R25m which translates into monthly instalments of at least R250 000.
