Afrikaans lawyers test LPC's 'English only' instruction
The Association of Lawyers for Afrikaans (VRA) is taking the Legal Practice Council (LPC) to court to review its decision that professional exams for candidate attorneys, notaries and conveyancers are in future to be written only in English, says Rapport.
VRA chairperson Dawie Beyers describes the decision as irrational in papers filed in the Gauteng High Court (Pretoria).
The only reason provided by the LPC for the change is that ‘complaints’ about the ‘dual language system excludes other official languages’.
VRA is asking the LPC to disclose the complaints to the court.
It argues Afrikaans is the third largest home language in the country and the most prominent language in the Western and Northern Cape as well the second-most spoken language in the Eastern Cape, Free State and North West.
The LPC has yet to respond to the review application.
