R2.3m for assault by crooked traffic officers
A motorist who was assaulted when he took pictures of traffic officials accepting bribes next to the N1 will get R2.3m compensation.
Rapport reports that Ludwich de Klerk is still suffering from trauma as a result of the assault in 2011 near Makhado in Limpopo.
Three traffic officials pulled him over for speeding. According to court papers, the officials attempted to bribe De Klerk, but he insisted that they should give him a fine.
He then saw how other officials took ‘blue notes’ from another motorist who was pulled over and took pictures with his cell phone.
The traffic officials then demanded De Klerk’s phone and assaulted him.
Two officials held his hands behind his back while a third kicked him.
The court found that the officials did assault De Klerk and held the Department of Roads & Transport in Limpopo liable for the injuries.
A R2.3m settlement was agreed.
