MultiChoice addresses tax wrangling ‘technicalities’
MultiChoice is confident that its tax woes in Nigeria will be resolved, as the company fights two claims brought against it by that country's revenue authorities.
A report on the Fin24 site notes that the company has been slapped with a $4.4bn which it is disputing.
CFO Tim Jacobs yesterday said both matters were still being argued on technicalities in Nigeria to assess whether the tribunal can hear the merits of the case.
‘We have taken a close look at the arguments that the revenue authority has put forward, and we strongly believe that they are wrong,’ Jacobs said.
He said discussions with revenue authorities over the matter were taking place in a bid to bring it to a close sooner – in a market where a number of SA companies have found themselves entangled in hefty fines imposed by various regulatory authorities.
He added that MultiChoice had conducted its business in Nigeria within the limits of the country's laws and that the legal route they have taken over the tax claims was meant to protect the company's rights.
