Unlawful occupants of housing project face eviction
Eastern Cape High Court (East London) Judge Belinda Hartle has given the ‘unlawful occupants’ of the Reeston housing project in the city until tomorrow to explain why they should not be evicted from the incomplete houses they have occupied.
According to a Daily Dispatch report, Human Settlements MEC Nonceba Kontsiwe and Upahla Construction approached the High Court in a bid to interdict the occupants from occupying and vandalising the houses.
They also wanted the occupants to refrain from threatening the contractor.
Hartle ordered that the occupants, and any other person who might have an interest in this matter, ‘show cause’ in court why an order interdicting and restraining the occupants from interfering with the construction activities and administration of the housing project, should be not be made final.
The court ordered that the occupants refrain from refusing or blocking the contractor and subcontractors from having access to the incomplete housing units, and that they stop inciting and encouraging violence near the construction’s site offices and the housing units still under construction.
The occupants have also been barred from ‘occupying, vandalising and putting foreign material’ on the incomplete housing project.
