ANC deeply divided over Zondo findings
The fallout over how the ANC should implement the recommendations in the report on state capture by Chief Justice Raymond Zondo is threatening to destabilise President Cyril Ramaphosa’s strongholds.
ANC chairperson Gwede Mantashe who has been a key ally in assisting Ramaphosa in his rise to the presidency in 2017, is said to be increasingly worried about being hauled over the coals in relation to recommendations in the report that he should be charged with corruption for receiving free security installations at his home by Bosasa.
The Daily Maverick reports that corruption charges could see Mantashe being forced to step aside following the precedent set up by former secretary-general Ace Magashule, which could rule him out of the leadership race.
Mantashe is now battling with Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane, who has emerged as a key Ramaphosa campaigner and who is contesting to be re-elected at the province’s conference late next month.
Mantashe has reportedly been backing a challenger to Mabuyane, Amathole regional secretary Terris Ntutu.
