Municipal defaulter pays R54m of its Eskom debt
Eskom has confirmed that historical municipal defaulter Maluti-A-Phofung (MAP) has settled R54m of its debt, reports The Citizen.
‘This is the first time in years that the current account was serviced in full. Eskom appreciates this payment and hopes that this is a start to a new chapter,’ said the parastatal in a statement.
But Eskom denied it has a payment arrangement with MAP.
‘Had that been true, the arrear debt would not have ballooned to a staggering, R6.6 bn.’
The embattled power supplier hopes to recover all outstanding amounts which would make a significant dent in MAP’s overdue debt.
Since 2020, Eskom has been attempting to claw back the R31.5bn owed to it by some municipalities.
It has taken control of bank accounts and seized assets as part of its campaign to recover the money.
