Bosasa property up for sale
A 9ha copper smelter in Krugersdorp that was part of the former Bosasa empire is for sale.
The property – which includes facilities once used for farming prawns – features an illegal structure, misappropriated land and a list of missing or incomplete paperwork.
Bosasa was implicated in rampant corruption under the watch of Gavin Watson, who died in a car crash in August 2019.
It specialised in the provision of government services but is better known for corporate shenanigans exposed during the Zondo Commission of Inquiry into State Capture.
The Sunday Times reports that the smelter is near Bosasa’s former head office in Luipaardsvlei, which featured 16 buildings.
The boundary wall of the copper plant illegally encroaches into a neighbouring property.
The smelter also lacks an environmental impact assessment and the requisite industrial zoning.
The plant was never fully commissioned despite the construction of hostels, residential units, workshops, offices and a weighbridge.
