Minister of Home Affairs Aaron Motsoaledi has said the department will launch a three-year project to digitise its records.

A News24 report notes Motsoaledi announced that the project will cost R2.4bn over three years and around 10 000 graduates are expected to be employed.

‘90% of the money is going to pay the other stipend, and the other 10% is going to buy equipment.’

The project will see around 350m birth, death, marriage and amendment records documents that date back to 1895 being digitised.

Motsoaledi also stated that little progress had been achieved with their current efforts due to the department’s records increasing every year.

He added that the department was in the process of recruiting record management, information technology, and document management graduates.

The initial group of employees is expected to start in November with the second group beginning in January 2023.

Motsoaledi said that a total of 60% of the employees will be women.
