Bara’s R992m medical negligence claims flagged
Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital is faced with an estimated R1bn in medical claims for negligence as a result of a shortage of staff members, broken operating theatres, and non-functional equipment.
City Press reports that the Gauteng Health Department revealed this in the provincial legislature yesterday.
Gauteng Shadow Health MEC Jack Bloom said over the past four years, there had been 50 medical negligence claims for R992m that had been filed against the maternity unit.
‘Half of these cases are cerebral palsy in babies and individual claims ranging from R10m to R51m. There are also claims on the deaths of five babies requesting an amount ranging from R400 000 to R7m,’ Bloom said.
