Retired Constitutional Court Judge Sisi Khampepe yesterday delivered a damning report after her inquiry into allegations of racism at Stellenbosch University.

Rector and vice-chancellor, Wim de Villers, said the findings of the Khampepe Commission are ‘a tipping point’ for the institution. 

The DA has indicated that it will immediately take the report on legal review, saying it ‘outrageously scapegoats the Afrikaans language for any and all problems at the university’.

And a teachers’ union has warned MPs that a veto right for the Department of Basic Education about a school’s language and admission policies will end up in litigation.

In a separate matter, the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) yesterday noted that it may take legal action against a consultant firm that conducted a diversity intervention at a Cape Town school which sparked racial tensions.

The commission began its work on 13 June, shortly after first-year law student, Theuns du Toit, was expelled after a video on social media showed him urinating on the desk of a black student.

Another student was suspended following a similar incident last month.

The incidents unleashed an outcry from fellow students calling for an end to racism and harassment at the university.
