A Unisa student wrote her same exam twice, but both scripts were rejected by the university, allegedly due to online technical glitches.

Now she is considering writing the English paper for the third time.

The student, who asked not to be identified, told City Press that Unisa said she had either failed to fully upload her script on the MyExams portal or did not use the invigilator app when she was writing. 

Unisa introduced the app at the height of Covid-19 to help the university uphold academic integrity. 

The app works on cellphones and assists assessors in mitigating risks associated with online assessments, such as cheating.

With the migration from venue-based to online exams, in February 2021 Unisa said it had seen an increase in cheating and plagiarism cases and was putting measures in place to address these issues.

At the time, the university had issued 750 warning letters to students.

The student, who lives in Impendle in KZN, said she was willing to rewrite the exam because this was the last module she had to complete for her to graduate with a Bachelor of Education degree.

Unisa national SRC deputy secretary-general Inga Kweta said they had been made aware of these problems.
