More tax woes for Bushiri
After evaluating Bushiri’s assets in SA, the SARS is relentlessly chasing nearly R70m in unpaid income tax from an investment entity that belongs to the self-proclaimed prophet.
The matter has resulted in a civil court action.
City Press reports that three identical letters of demand were served to the pastor’s company Shepherd Bushiri Investments on 11 May, claiming amounts stipulated as R19 040 778, R20 197 473 and R30 110 771 that needed to be paid within 10 business days.
Last month, City Press reported that SARS was also separately seeking to recover more than R44m from Bushiri and his wife, Mary, who fled SA with her husband after they skipped bail.
The Bushiris fled in 2020 after being granted bail of R200 000 by the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court.
They are facing various charges relating to fraud and money laundering. In its latest demand, SARS said it is adamant that civil action would be taken against the cleric in the Gauteng High Court (Johannesburg).
The letter added that a civil judgment could be made against Bushiri, in which case a warrant of execution could be issued for the sheriff to attach and sell his assets.
Bushiri’s assets could be sequestrated because of the controversial pastor’s failure to oppose an ex parte court application brought to the Gauteng High Court (Johannesburg) by a creditor, identified as the JM Busha Investment Group.
