World Rugby yesterday cleared Springbok hooker Bongi Mbonambi to play in tomorrow's World Cup final.

Addressing the racial slur allegation that was levelled at him by England flank Tom Curry in last Saturday’s Rugby World Cup semi-final, it said there is insufficient evidence to take the matter forward.

News24 reports that the matter was taken up by World Rugby in the form of a formal review which had put Mbonambi at risk of not being able to front up for tomorrow's World Cup final against the All Blacks.

In a statement, World Rugby said its fight against discrimination will continue and the players need to be protected from social media abuse.

‘Having considered all the available evidence, including match footage, audio and evidence from both teams, the governing body has determined that there is insufficient evidence at this time to proceed with charges,’ the statement said.

‘Therefore, the matter is deemed closed unless additional evidence comes to light.’
