Mpofu to represent Bester in prison escape case
Convicted rapist and murderer Thabo Bester has moved to bolster his legal representation, reports EWN.
He told the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court yesterday that he would use the services of Advocate Dali Mpofu SC for his prison escape case.
His state lawyer also told the court that he would be assisted by Advocate Zandile Mshololo.
Mshololo is representing one of the accused in the high profile Senzo Meyiwa murder trial.
‘I feel that there is quite a few things I want them to deal with,’ Bester said.
Bester escaped from the Mangaung Correctional Facility in May 2022 after faking his death. The main accomplice who is believed to have aided and abetted his escape is Nandipha Magudumana – a celebrity medical doctor.
Meanwhile, charges were dropped against three of the 12 accused as the case got underway yesterday.
A TimesLIVE report notes that prosecutor Amanda Bester kicked off proceedings with the announcement of the withdrawal of the state's case against former G4S employees Nastassja Jansen, Thabang Matthews Mier and Moeketsi Ramolula.
Eleven of the 12 accused were present in court, including Bester.
Magudumana, was absent after she ‘collapsed’ earlier in the holding cells.
Her lawyer Machini Motloung said his client was not well and alternative arrangements were made around her scheduled appearance.
It is believed an application has been made for her to appear virtually.
The trial was adjourned.
