Matters are intensifying in the case of actor Thabo Malema whose operation was allegedly botched last December by a celebrity doctor in Johannesburg.

Adding to her woes, she later discovered that the assistant doctor was not registered with the Health Professions Council of SA. 

City Press reports that health professionals are legally required to register with the council in order to practise.

The report says the mother of two was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2022 and advised to induce menopause – to enable her hormones to stave off cancer cells.

However, she opted to remove her uterus.

According to Mbambo, her complications arose when it was discovered that, after the womb removal, the surgeon and assistant surgeon failed to attach the ureters, the tubes connecting the kidneys to the bladder, to enable urination.

A source close to the matter shared with City Press a 23 November letter which notes that the hospital sympathises with Mbambo and her matter is been escalated to the head office. It states that the surgeon who operated on Mbambo is not employed by the hospital.

The doctor has practising privileges at the hospital and has practised for a number of years and is still practising at the hospital. 

Police spokesperson Mavela Masondo confirmed that a case of attempted murder and impersonating a medical practitioner has been opened and investigations are under way.
