Municipality denies R33m missing from bank account
The IFP-led Zululand District Municipality in northern KZN has denied claims that R33m went missing from its municipal funds, reports City Press.
This follows demands from the EFF in KZN for a forensic investigation into the alleged illegal withdrawal of the money from its bank account.
On Tuesday communications manager at Zululand District Municipality Zanele Mthethwa dismissed the EFF's statement as being without merit.
‘It is another desperate attempt to derail Zululand’s unparalleled record of service delivery led by Mayor Thulasizwe Buthelezi,’ she said.
However, the municipality manager, Ntokozo Hlongwa, confirmed that on 27 December, Absa alerted them to attempted unauthorised access to their bank account.
He said that the fraud was prevented and no money was lost, adding that a case had been opened at Ulundi Police Station while Absa was conducting an internal investigation.
The EFF in KZN issued a scathing statement, demanding a thorough forensic investigation into the accounts of the district municipality, adding that it was concerning that such a large sum of money disappeared with no one noticing.
They further called for the removal of Buthelezi.
