Homeless people who have been living on tennis courts in Green Point, Cape Town, have been removed by the sheriff of the court, reports News24.

The City of Cape Town law enforcement, along with heavily armed police, yesterday swooped on the area to dismantle structures.

As previously reported, the Western Cape High Court in December granted the city a final eviction order.

It gave 37 people who lived on the property to vacate voluntarily by 31 January or the city would obtain a warrant of ejectment.

Ward councillor Nicola Jowell said many of the occupants of the site were assisted over the last 10 days to alternative accommodation.

Jowell added that a number of the structures had already been abandoned and some had been removed with the occupants' permission on 14 February.

‘For the most part, the eviction has been conducted without incident, although one occupant did set a structure alight and fire services were on the scene to attend to this. The city has for many months and with increased intensity over the last two months offered the occupants here a dignified alternative to living on the streets,’ she said.
