Surgeon fined for botched hysterectomy
Celebrity publicist Hlengiwe Mbambo, who is married to former Scandal! actor Thabo Malema, reportedly cried ‘tears of joy’ when she heard that the doctor who had botched her hysterectomy was convicted.
Mbambo opened a case with the Health Professions Council of SA (HPCSA) last year.
The surgery took place at a Johannesburg hospital in December 2022. A computed tomography scan showed that when the doctor stitched Mbambo’s bladder after the operation, he failed to attach her ureters.
She began experiencing pain and was unable to urinate normally, as her left kidney was affected.
In addition, she found out that the doctor had used an unregistered assistant – Dr Michael Acheampong – during the surgery.
A source told City Press that the HPCSA had issued the verdict on Wednesday which revealed that the doctor had been found guilty of unprofessional conduct and incompetence.
He was fined R30 000, plus a further R15 000 for using an unregistered assistant and an additional R20 000 for putting Mbambo’s life in danger, following an incomplete consent process.
The document stated that she had not been adequately informed of the risks involved in her surgery. The extent of the injuries sustained and the morbidity associated with them are the reasons a maximum fine has been imposed.
Mbambo refused to comment on the doctor, but revealed that she and the EFF Women’s League are planning a protest outside the hospital on Thursday.
She also said that she had gone to the Johannesburg Metro Police Department to apply for a protest certificate.
