Unisa is pulling out all the stops to set aside a writ of execution obtained by the troubled institution’s former accountant, which enabled her to attach R5m worth of the university’s assets as an arbitration award for unfair dismissal.

City Press reports that the university last month brought an application before the Labour Court in Johannesburg, contending that it had paid Julia Dube more than R2m, following a directive from the SARS.

The university subsequently embarked on a bid to have the court interdict the sheriff from implementing the execution order that was granted by the CCMA.

According to the court papers, Dube pursued litigation against the university after being dismissed in June 2016.

An affidavit deposed to by Unisa’s legal adviser Puleng Ringane, pleads that the sheriff be halted from dispossessing the university’s assets pending the trial. 

‘Unisa and Dube settled the dispute in terms of the settlement agreement which was made a court order, where the university agreed to make R5 million (payment) to Dube and obtained a directive from SARS regarding the amount,’ read the papers.

City Press last week reported that a whistle blower had implicated a senior management member at the university on allegations of soliciting and receiving bribes from students in an anonymous email sent to top management, including vice-chancellor Professor Puleng Lenkabula.
