Dog owner in court over assault footage
‘People will never know how much we love our dog,’ said a Cape Town man who spent a night in jail last week for assaulting his Boston Terrier.
Vincent Blackburn was arrested after he was filmed by a neighbour repeatedly beating the puppy.
City Press reports that the SPCA initially received the video from an anonymous complainant, but they later tracked down two witnesses who gave statements.
Blackburn says ‘there are things like anger management that I am now going through’.
Jaco Pieterse, chief inspector of the SPCA, says they want to prevent the animal from being returned to his owner, but the decision is now in the hands of the court.
‘If he is found guilty under the Animal Welfare Act, the magistrate can say he loses ownership of Waffles and will not be able to keep any other animal. The dog is being cared for by the SPCA in the meantime.’
Blackburn is due to appear in court again on Friday.
