A fist fight erupted among some of the accused in the Charl Kinnear murder trial in the Western Cape High Court yesterday.

This happened while the court was setting up for a witness to testify about the attempted murder of lawyer William Booth and a Woodstock gang's alleged involvement, reports News24.

The state alleges these attempts on Booth were on the instructions of the Terrible Westsiders (TWS), who were doing the job for Nafiz Modack.

The charges were denied by all 15 accused.

To bolster the reason for the new witness, prosecutor Blane Lazarus read into the record the plea and sentencing deal for accused Riyaat Gesant.

In the admissions for the deal, Gesant spilt the beans about the Booth incident, naming people who were with him and who was giving the orders, including the alleged leader of the TWS gang from Woodstock.

Gesant is still implicated in other charges relating to the pattern of gang activity the state is weaving into its evidence in a bid to bolster its Prevention of Organised Crime charges.

So, he now sits in this trial, too, as an accused, placed next to Bubbles Brown, the alleged leader of the TWS.

It is not clear whether Gesant's confession was seen as ‘piemping’ or whether the appearance of another alleged TWS member, who might break gang rules and tell all, set Brown off.

But without warning, Brown pounced on Gesant, punching him, the sound breaking the drone of conversation while the witness was brought in from witness protection.

Some in the dock stood back, and others fell into a scrum around the flying fists.

The specialist police and the orderlies then pulled the men apart.

The case was then adjourned.
