A complaint has been filed at the Health Professionals Council of SA (HPCSA) against Dr Elliot Shevel (81) who was suspended last week following the deaths of two patients – one in June, and the other in 2021.

News24 reports that Bruce Johnstone went to The Headache Clinic in Johannesburg on 3 November 2022 for a procedure to cure tension headaches.

Staff called an ambulance to take him to Milpark Hospital after he collapsed and lost consciousness after an unspecified procedure was performed on him.

Johnstone was diagnosed with a bilateral haemorrhage to the brain.

Shevel, a maxillo-facial and oral surgeon, started The Headache Clinic in 1992 and has served as its medical director ever since.

As previously reported, Shevel has been suspended from practising by the HSPCA pending an investigation into the previous deaths.

HPCSA spokesperson Priscilla Sekhonyana said: ‘(It is alleged) he was posing harm or risk as a result of unsafe professional practise or substantial risk of such harm or injury. His conduct indicates that the members of the public might be at risk should he continue to practise his profession.’
