The worst kept secret in politics was finally made official on Friday when, barely a week after resigning as EFF MP and telling its leadership she needed time with her family, former Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane joined former President Jacob Zuma's MKP.

At a press briefing, the party unveiled her as its Mpumalanga convener, says a News24 report.

Former ANC leader and KZN Premier Willies Mchunu was also announced as a provincial convener in KZN.

On her decision to join Zuma's party, Mkhwebane said: ‘It's a home that understands the persecution of black people and (fights) a captured system. uMkhonto weSizwe is what needs to be done to liberate the people (sic).’

Mchunu resigned from the ANC this month, saying he would meet the party ‘in the political terrain’ and he would be joining a new political home.

At the briefing, Mchunu said the ANC could no longer meet his aspirations.

‘My reason for joining is the MK Party is the people's choice and it's also my choice. It's the only home and future for the people in the working class,’ he added.

At the same briefing, MKP spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela announced Zuma would, on 1 November, be appealing the ANC's national disciplinary committee decision to fire him.
