R360m SAPS tender cancelled
National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola has cancelled a R360m tender awarded to Vusimusi Matlala as allegations of fraud, collusion and flouting of procurement law continue to mount.
The deal – which saw Matlala’s little-known company, Medicare24 Tswane District, provide all manner of health and risk screening to 180 000 police employees – was cancelled last Monday.
News24 reports that Matlala’s state-sponsored windfall was revealed by News24 last year in an investigation titled 9 Lives.
It came at a time when he was a central figure in a R2.3bn Tembisa Hospital corruption probe.
Two days after the tender was cancelled, Matlala was arrested in a dramatic highway sting in Midrand. He has been charged with attempted murder and conspiracy for the botched hit on his former lover, Tebogo Thobejane, in 2023.
Now, as police top brass are without a service provider, the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption has launched a probe focused on allegations of collusion, fronting, fraud and violations of the Public Finance Management Act.
Matlala is also facing liquidation and copyright court applications from sub-contractors on the tender who have gone unpaid for months.
