Security company owner and underworld murder-accused Andre Naudé was shot dead in Parow yesterday. Safety and Security Mayoral Committee member JP Smith told News24 that Naudé died at the scene of the shooting in Voortrekker Road.

Naudé was with his bodyguard at the time. Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said the occupants of a charcoal BMW ‘randomly fired several shots’.

A 61-year-old man was wounded and taken to a nearby hospital, where he is under police guard.

The Anti-Gang Unit is investigating a case of murder and three of attempted murder. Naudé’s co-accused and alleged Sexy Boys gang boss Jerome ‘Donkie’ Booysen was at the scene.

‘I am shocked ... he was a friend.’

Naudé had been on trial in the Western Cape High Court with the late underworld figure and businessman Mark Lifman, Booysen and 10 other co-accused for the murder of Brian Wainstein in 2017.

According to the indictment in the Wainstein trial, Lifman, Booysen, Booysen’s brother, Colin, and Naudé were in a ‘brotherhood’ that controlled nightclub and restaurant security in the Cape Town CBD. 

News24 reports that Lifman was shot dead in a parking lot at Garden Route Mall in George in November last year; Gert Bezuidenhout and Johannes Hendrik Jacobs were arrested in connection with the murder shortly afterwards. They remain in custody after their bail appeal was denied.

The Daily Maverick reports that Naude’s murder will probably cause shifts in the arenas he operated in.

Investigations into Lifman’s killing included looking into his possible involvement in security contracts linked to another province.

Naude and Lifman were among a group of men who were involved in Cape Town’s nightclub security scene, aspects of which have resulted in criminal charges against various individuals and sparked violence in the city.

Naude is the fifth accused in the Wainstein case to be killed.

Wainstein, who had been wanted in the US, was shot dead in his bed at his home in Constantia in August 2017. Another prominent accused in the Wainstein murder case is Booysen.

In 2017, suspected organised crime kingpin Nafiz Modack allegedly tried to seize control of bouncer operations in the city from the three men, a group that police investigators had labelled the ‘Lifman group’.

According to the investigators and what surfaced in court cases, clashes between the ‘Modack group’ and the ‘Lifman group’ sparked violence in Cape Town from 2017 onwards.

Modack was arrested and then acquitted for security service-related matters.

He was subsequently rearrested for other crimes and is now in custody and on trial in connection with the murder of policeman Charl Kinnear in Cape Town in September 2020.
