The main suspect in the brazen murders of liquidators Cloete and Thomas Murray has been gunned down.

News24 can confirm a shooting, that took place in the parking lot of the Netcare Milpark Hospital on Wednesday evening, claimed the life of Burnett Hermanus who police had on the top of their list of suspects as the gunman in the assassinations of the Murrays more than two-and-a-half years ago.

Hermanus was known by several aliases, including ‘Mr B’.

The bullet-riddled vehicle at the scene is registered to him. The 45-year-old Hermanus, who lived in Alberton, has been on the list of suspects the investigation team assigned to the Murray case have been hunting for nearly two years.

The investigating officer on the Murray case had been tasked with tracing Hermanus, with a view to possibly arresting him, during a meeting with Major-General Richard Shibiri on 1 September.

Shibiri has been supervising the investigation since May 2024, following a meeting between the Murray family and now suspended Deputy National Commissioner for Crime Detection, Lieutenant-General Shadrack Sibiya.

The Murray father and son had spent the morning of their murders working, securing three properties in Brooklyn and Waterkloof in Pretoria and in Melrose Arch in Johannesburg.

The properties were owned by I2 Infinite Innovations, part of a group of companies owned by brother and sister Rushil and Nishani Singh.

Investec Bank had initiated the liquidations after it became apparent a fraudulent bank guarantee was used to secure loans worth approximately R178m.

Nishani Singh died in custody while facing fraud charges linked to the faked guarantee.

The trial of Rushil Singh is ongoing.
