Millions of rands worth of assets linked to alleged diamond conman Louis Liebenberg are set to go under the hammer this week as the business empire he built up over more than a decade is sold off in a series of auctions, reports News24.

The auctions, which started yesterday and continue into November, marks the end of Tariomix, his diamond company.

The state has placed Tariomix – better known by its trading name Forever Diamonds and Gold – at the centre of what it says is a multibillion-rand Ponzi scheme.

The company was already placed into final liquidation last year.

The NPA has said said that Liebenberg used investor cash as his personal piggy bank, spending it on cars, mines, Krugerrands and a ‘lavish wedding and honeymoon in Greece’.

Liebenberg has been in prison in Pretoria as a remand detainee.

Last month, he was ordered to spend a month in Weskoppies Psychiatric Hospital for a court-ordered evaluation. The 61-year-old has repeatedly denied wrongdoing, saying his businesses were legitimate.

Some of the 250-plus items up for auction include a framed photo of former President Jacob Zuma, a framed photo of SA’s first State President, CR Swart, and a couture evening dress by fashion designer Gert-Johan Coetzee.

Seven cars are set to be sold, including a 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE 400D 4Matic.

Proceeds from the various auctions will go into a pot to be distributed to creditors by liquidators at a later date.
