More assets seized from Jooste estate
The SARB has seized five cars – including a Mercedes-Benz SL600 – as well as jewellery and paintings worth around R795 400 from the executor of the estate of the late Steinhoff boss Markus Jooste, News24 reports.
The five cars have a combined value of around R1.5m.
The personal effects, including art and jewellery, are not individually listed. Together, the cars and personal effects are worth around R2.3m.
The forfeiture order is the first time the state has confiscated assets from Jooste’s estate.
It comes 18 months after the Steinhoff boss died by suicide in Hermanus a day before he was meant to hand himself over to the Hawks.
He was the key accused in the state’s fraud and corruption case against Steinhoff executives.
The case is continuing with three of his colleagues – Hein Odendaal, Iwan Peter Schelbert and Stéhan Grobler – set to again appear in court in December.
In a notice in the Government Gazette, SARB's Deputy Governor Fundi Tshazibana, said the forfeitures against Jooste’s estate were linked to long-running probes into breaches of exchange control regulations.
