Zuma to testify on behalf of Duduzile
Former President Jacob Zuma is scheduled to testify on behalf of his daughter, Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, and the state is expected to call a cellphone expert when the trial resumes next week.
The long-awaited hearing began on Monday in the KZN High Court (Durban) before Judge Mbuzeni Mathenjwa.
The Witness reports that Zuma-Sambudla faces three counts of incitement to commit terrorism and two counts of incitement to commit public violence.
She is charged with incitement to commit public violence; attempting to do so and incitement to commit terrorism.
The state alleges that Zuma-Sambudla’s social media posts encouraged violence that led to the destruction of property, disruption of essential services, and widespread economic losses during the unrest.
Her advocate, Dali Mpofu SC, told the court that he intends to call Zuma as his first witness.
Mpofu said Zuma would dispute the state’s evidence and would argue that his daughter’s prosecution is politically motivated.
On Wednesday, State Advocate Yuri Gangai told the court he would need time to consult with his next witness – a cellphone expert who will testify about the origin of video clips Zuma-Sambudla posted online during the July 2021 riots.
The expert’s testimony is expected to clarify whether the images and videos Zuma-Sambudla shared were supplied to her directly or were already trending online, as the defence has argued.
