A Polokwane law firm named in the Limpopo Legislature’s procurement scandal has written to the legislature to distance itself from a payment of R174 364.92 deposited into its account.

The firm says it never performed the work or invoiced for the sum, according to News24.

The letter, signed by director Mohale Calvin Lebea and dated 8 June 2026, was sent directly to the secretary of the Limpopo Legislature, Timothy Maake, in the wake of News24’s investigation into suspicious payments made by the legislature over the weekend of the ANC’s provincial elective conference in March.

In the missive, Lebea & Associates makes clear the deposit arrived without any invoice number or reference that it could recognise and that the firm had no record of rendering any service that would justify the payment.

The 6 June News24 investigation questioned whether public funds were used to reward politically connected service providers. The legislature denied any wrongdoing. Limpopo Legislature spokesperson, Andries Lekalakala, declined to comment further.

In the letter, the law firm said the reference used in the deposit was similar to the reference for some deposits for ‘services which were rendered on previous occasions in respect of which we had invoiced your institution’.

The firm’s letter demands the legislature must confirm whether it authorised the payment, provide the invoice number the deposit was meant to settle, and forward a copy of that invoice to the firm.

If confirmed, this would locate the source of any wrongdoing within the legislature’s finance and procurement structures.

The legislature’s R30m legal bill has been referred for audit scrutiny, while the ANC in the province has summoned the legislature leadership to account for it.
