WC man fights for the right to die
Dieter Harck (76) who has been living with motor neurone disease since 2013 is battling for the right to die.
He and his partner, Lynne Grubb are part of DignitySA’s landmark legal challenge in the Gauteng High Court (Johannesburg) to decriminalise assisted dying for terminally or incurably ill patients.
‘I do not want to be connected to a ventilator and I do not want artificial feeding or hydration. I have a living will in which I have set out these personal preferences for when the time comes,’ he said.
News24 reports that Lynne, who joined DignitySA’s board of directors in May 2022, is cautiously hopeful the court case will succeed.
But she’s under no illusions about what victory might mean for them personally.
‘This will probably not be available for Dieter as I foresee this taking a few years to get the process sorted out,’ she said.
