Bishops alumni moves to remove committee
The dispute over the pride flag at Bishops Diocesan College in Cape Town has escalated into a broader governance crisis, with 122 Old Diocesans formally ‘requisitioning’ a special general meeting to vote for the removal of the Old Diocesan Committee (ODC).
News24 reports that the requisition calls for two resolutions: a vote of no confidence in the committee and the removal of all elected members, followed by fresh elections for every position, with worldwide electronic voting and independent returning officers.
It was made under Clause 6.3.1 of the Old Diocesan Union (ODU) constitution, which requires at least 50 signatures.
The members behind it have requested notice by 1 October and for the meeting to be scheduled by 29 October at the latest.
Matters have intensified since August, when actor and former ODU vice-chairperson Anton Taylor suspended his threatened no-confidence campaign after the committee agreed in principle to fresh elections.
The dispute began after the ODC asked the Bishops school council to adopt a formal flag policy limiting official flags to the South African, Bishops and St George’s flags, prompting competing alumni campaigns and Taylor’s public break with the committee.
