In the late 1800’s attorney A.M. Lewis established a legal practice in Paarl. His son A.J. Lewis took over the practice early in the 1900’s and during the succeeding years, the name of the firm mirrored the changes in partners, namely Lewis & Basson, Basson & Van der Spuy, and in 1967, Van der Spuy & Partners.

The firm was incorporated and became known as Van der Spuy (Western Cape) Incorporated in 1997.
