Charles Pierre Francois Marais

Charles Marais heads up our projects and energy department. He is a former merchant banker with experience in project and export finance. As a result, he has an in-depth understanding of lenders' requirements and their approach to risk and risk mitigation. Charles has extensive experience in the finance, energy, mining, construction and infrastructure sectors. He has conducted numerous workshops on project finance and has written articles for various publications, such as Without Prejudice, African Investor and Business Law & Tax Review. He has also presented papers at several conferences. Representative experience: Advisor to Ilangalethu Solar Power, a company developing a 100MW CSP plant in terms of the South African Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Programme (REIPPP)Advisor to Australian Riversdale Mining regarding the establishment of a discard coal-fired power station in Mozambique, including drafting various agreements relating thereto. Part of the advisory team to Zesco (Zambia) on the Kariba North Bank extension hydro-electric project and the Itezhi-Tezhi hydro-electric project (Zambia). Advisor to ENMO Independent Power Project on the establishment of an independent power project in Mozambique, including negotiation of a Concession Agreement with the government. Evaluation, negotiation and conclusion of documentation for a correctional services project, two platinum mines, and two casinos. Limpopo-Lipadi Game Reserve (Botswana): Negotiation of land acquisition, preparation of documents for an eco-tourist project, and negotiation of project roll-out term loan with DBSA. Drafting of mining agreements, electricity supply agreement, various logistic agreements, construction and related agreements for a manganese mine in South Africa.
